A Personal Wake-Up Call: The Toxic Truth About Common Herbicides

After my dog Mowgli was poisoned by common herbicides, I became deeply committed to raising awareness about the hidden dangers these toxic chemicals pose to our pets, families, and shared environments.

Pets are the greatest indicator of toxic environmental exposure.

  • If the grass you are walking your pet on looks perfectly manicured (think golf course grass ps- golf courses are notoriously treated with chemicals) it is most likely treated with some sort of chemical that can possibly be harmful to you and your pet.

    If this is a public park or open space call the city or municipality and ask to speak with the parks and recreation department to find out more information of their land care practices. You will be surprised at how many cities are still using glyphosate!

    If you live within an HOA community or rent within a large community reach out to the board or landscaping committee to find out what chemicals are being used. Ask for a spray schedule to determine what days to avoid the area.

In January 2022 Mowgli went for a walk in our neighborhood in Summerlin, Las Vegas.

When we came home his back legs collapsed.

After reaching out to neighbors in Summerlin, Las Vegas (137,000+ people live in the HOA owned by Howard Hughes Corporation) we found that Mowgli was not the only dog effected.

  • "Our dog Buddy had the same symptoms, I was going back and forth deciding whether I should reply to this post. My father-in-law walked him, would take him to dog parks, he was overall really healthy. During one of the walks last summer his hind legs gave out. My father-in-law carried him home. A checkup was done with a clean bill of health. He had lost weight and had a slight seizure. In August late evening my father-in-law took him for a walk along a bike path between subdivisions and his back legs gave out again. By the time they came home Buddy had stopped breathing and my husband started doing CPR on him. Unfortunately he passed away a few minutes later."

  • "This needs more attention. We have been residents of Summerlin for 18 years. Our Golden Lucy passed in 2016 of melanoma cancer that started on her toe. My mom passed in 2018 of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She’s been a resident in LV since 1996 living many years in Summerlin. We are all aware of the class action law suit around the weed killer Round-Up and lymphoma but that was not a factor for her cancer and we still are left not knowing. This makes me wonder. All the wind and dust puts lots of stuff in the air we breathe and that we are all exposed to."

  • “We walk our dogs in the parks and paseos of Peccole Ranch every day. Recently I will one of our schnauzers who was completely healthy and almost never went to the vet except for dental cleaning got a rare type of cancer in her mouth, out of the blue we first had it removed and then it came back with a vengeance and we had to put her to sleep. Our vibrant happy peppy dog’s Life was cut short. And, it’s completely heartbreaking. It’s very hard to believe she’s not with us. Our other schnauzer is still with us and maybe has been more resilient but he also developed a strange growth in his mouth that our vet has never seen anything like it. He also developed some other bumps on his body and a mass on his chest.”

  • "My dog have very similar symptoms. They started about 6 months ago. He became lethargic, refused to eat, disoriented, unable to stand properly, and would hide away from everyone. We took him to the vet and they ran many tests all coming out inconclusive and costing us around 9,000 dollars."

  • “My husband and I moved to Summerlin (Paseos) 4/30/21 and my dog has been sick every 2-3 months due to vomiting, elevated liver levels/poisoning, pancreatitis, gastritis. She has been in and out of the ER and animal hospital over the last year and we cannot figure out what is making her sick. We have changed her food and we work from home. Our dog will be 10 years old this year and we have lived in multiple states and never had an issue with her health until moving to Summerlin.”

Days later Mowgli developed burns and rashes on his tongue and gums.

Months passed by and Mowgli went from 110lbs to 72lbs.

Mowgli passed away on December 1st, 2024. He was 7 years old. He woke up one morning and could not use his back legs. His weight was around 60lbs when we had to put him down.

He could barely open his mouth from severe Masticatory Muscle Myositis.

Mowgli didn’t deserve this painful death.
